H1N1 Policy

MAC H1N1 Policy

The recent tragedy with the death of a young athlete in the GTA has sparked a need for us to consider what we can do as a club to protect ourselves and prevent the spread of the H1N1 influenza.

There is much information available in the news and online to help you recognize the signs and symptoms of the virus and ways to prevent it.  We are not medical professionals and encourage you to educate yourselves on the virus.  Some useful websites include www.york.ca for local health department information and vaccination clinics.  For the most up to date H1N1 information from Health Canada please visit www.fightflu.ca.  In our investigation into this virus as it relates to sports teams, we have collected from various sources the attached information that we consider useful.  These include a chart on the difference between a cold and H1N1 and some simple tips for minimizing the impact of the flu.  These are provided for information only and are not intended to replace the advice and treatment of a medical professional if you suspect someone in your family has the flu.

As a club, the best thing that we can do to minimize the risk to our swimmers and families is to recognize the symptoms of the virus and to keep our children home from practice and meets if they are sick.  The symptoms of H1N1 include fever, cough, severe body aches, chills, headaches, fatigue and occasionally vomiting and diarrhea.  If your child is exhibiting signs of the flu, please keep them home and communicate your decision by email to their coach without concern for attendance penalties.  Let’s have a healthy and successful swim season!
