The Markham Aquatic Club spent the Canada Day Weekend in Ottawa at the Long Course Provincial Championships and once again, they continued on their journey to become the top swim club in the province. MAC finished a strong third position in Ontario through a determined effort from all of the young swimmers. Markham sent 36 athletes to the gruelling four day meet in Ottawa.
The medal winners were led by Madeline Paradkar, who grabbed four gold medals and one bronze. The gold came in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 800 freestyle and 400 Individual Medley. She picked up the bronze in the 400 freestyle. Madi’s success came despite an injury that limited her ability to practice for six weeks prior to the meet.
Justin McNamara picked up gold in the 800 freestyle and 100 backstroke. He also won silver in the 200 IM along with three bronze medals in the 400 free, 200 IM and 200 butterfly. Justin’s six individual events were all personal bests and all six were Markham Aquatic Club records. He also picked up the Iron Swimmer award for the 12 year old with the highest combined FINA points in the 800 Freestyle and 200 Individual Medley.
Jamy Young and Andrew Siu medaled in four events each. Jamy picked up silver in the 100 (Club Record) and 200 breaststroke and bronze in the 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke. Andrew received silver for the 100 breaststroke and won bronze for 200 breaststroke and the 200 and 400 Individual Medley events.
Jersey Bishop brought home three individual medals with gold in the 200 free, silver in the 100 free and bronze in the 400 free. Ryan Tong picked up silver in the 100 fly and bronze in the 200 IM and Aaron Guo won gold in the 100 fly and bronze in the 200 IM while Michael Min took home the silver in the 800 freestyle. Stephanie Shuai brought home the bronze medals in the 100 breaststroke and 200 free.
Markham also entered very strong relay teams at the Championship Meet. The girls 10 and under team of Jersey Bishop, Stephanie Shuai, Meghan Bethal and Katie Chan won a gold and three silver medals in their four relay swims. The boys 11 and under team saw five swimmers teaming up in the four different events. Bringing home two silvers and a bronze were Aaron Guo, Ryan Tong, Noah Clarke, Bryan Widjaja and York Qie. Another five man team of swimmers picked up two silver medals in the male 12 and 13 year old relays. Andrew Siu, Thomas Leung, Justin McNamara, Christian Ng and Tiger Zhou worked together for these medals.
Andrew Lee had a great meet with two silver medals in the afternoon finals. These medals came in the 200 IM and the 400 IM.
“Markham swimmers really rose to the challenges presented to them. I was impressed by how they responded to those challenges. Achieving third place in the Province was a total team effort. These Markham swimmers should feel proud of their accomplishments”, said an elated Head Coach Brian Lindsay.
The success of this meet comes on the heels of an extremely strong fifth place showing at Central Region Championships, a second place finish at Summer Team Champs and a fourth place finish at the Short Course Provincial Championships in February. “This team continues to make the Town of Markham proud and with two new qualifiers at this Provincial meet, Brandon Chow and Mark Chan, MAC is excited to be sending eighteen swimmers to Age Group Nationals in Winnipeg at the end of July”, Coach Lindsay added.
