Markham Swimmers Splash at National Debut

Etobicoke (29 November 2009)

Seventeen-year-old Jennifer Trung took a break from her university studies to lead a four-member contingent of the Markham Aquatic Club (MAC), at the first Canada Cup of the 2009-2010 Canadian national swim program. 550 swimmers representing over 100 swim programs from across Canada, the United States, and Bermuda attended the three-day event, November 27-28-29 at the Etobicoke Olympium. Canadian Senior and Junior national team members were in attendance to defend their titles against all-comers.

Top MAC performances came from Trung who placed 23rd in the 100-metre back with a strong time of 1:05.03 and 28th in the 100-metre Individual Medley, stopping the clock at 1:07.51 minutes.  MAC veteran Ben Stubbs (17) led the Markham men placing 28th in the 200-metre butterfly in 2:05.91 minutes.

Canada Cup Rookies Andrew Lee (17) and Natasha Strass-Hundal, (17) performed well on the national stage as Lee placed 52nd in the 100-metre Individual Medley, 1:03.38 minutes, and Strass-Hundal finished 33rd in the 50-metre backstroke in 30.52 seconds.

“I was very pleased with the effort from our swimmers as they swam stroke-to-stroke with our nation’s best” commented MAC head coach Sam Montgomery, “These early results indicate that we are on-track for a very successful fall-winter season.”
